Unique Rotations
Procedure Team with lead attending Dr. Aldo Pavon
Procedure Team
A unique feature of our program, the mandatory second year Procedure Team is a rotation dedicated to developing procedural competence and confidence. Residents are trained on ultrasound use and a variety of procedures, including paracentesis, thoracentesis, lumbar puncture, and central line placement. This 4-week rotation features a three-day instructional simulation component at our UM/JMH Center for Patient Safety taught by our own faculty. The residents then spend 4 weeks as the hospital Procedure Team under the direct supervision of faculty, responding to consults across Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Harvey/Cardiology Teaching Laboratory
The Cardiology Teaching Laboratory is an interactive comprehensive cardiology course focusing on essential cardiology physical exam skills and EKG interpretation. Harvey is a full-size mannequin who realistically simulates a wide variety of cardiac diseases at the touch of a button by varying blood pressure, pulses, heart sounds, murmurs and breath sounds. It is used worldwide at over 600 institutions to train thousands of learners.

At the 3 different locations, our teaching teams are equipped with dedicated portable ultrasound machines to use for diagnostic purposes and procedural guidance.
Healthcare Administration
This two-week elective provides residents with the knowledge and skills essential to bridge clinical practice and management. Residents gain key knowledge and skills in the business of medicine through mixed learning modalities, including lecture, small group, and workshops.
Wellness Elective
The Wellness Elective offers residents an opportunity to focus on 5 pillars: Happiness, Personal Care, Fitness, Financial Empowerment, and Resilience. As a core to this program, each resident is scheduled for a two-week Wellness elective in conjunction with a Primary Care block.
